Abstract
Objective: the objective of this study was to visualize the mental health impacts of young university students in Colombia, within the framework of the confinement policies taken due to the impact of the Coronavirus, from March 2020 to October 2020, who had technology-mediated education and limitations in their studies.
Methodology: a self-administered application and snowball sampling of the unidimensional scale of student burnout and stress indicators was made to 528 university students of the Colombian territory, to verify the level of the syndrome and stress in the study population.
Conclusions: high perceived levels of stress and anxiety derived from social distancing and the impossibility of attending educational centers were found, as well as academic difficulties originated. The students who filled out the survey stated that they felt limited and that the situation of confinement, anxiety and fear had affected their studies. The three dimensions of burnout (exhaustion, cynicism and ineffectiveness) were found to be positively and evidently related to high levels of anxiety that affected the quality of life of the young people and their mental and physical health. This population is particularly vulnerable because of their need for social interaction; some have low self-esteem and social pressure to succeed in their studies. Attention is drawn to university health systems on early warnings to avoid major difficulties in terms of mental health, so the consequences of SARS-COV-2 should be assessed in the near future and permanently.
