Abstract

This article aims to discuss two paradigmatic concepts in language studies- formalism and functionalism, basing on the metaphor of war proposed by Oliveira (1999) and based on a controversial foundational discussion in the Brazilian context, which occurred in the Program for Studies on or Use da Língua (PEUL) of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The main intention is to add views to the debate on collaborative forms of work between researchers from different theoretical lines and clarify the basics about these two visions of linguistic study which are, even today, the basis for ideological location of language researchers.
